Excellent customer service

We would like to preface this review by saying that we very rarely write reviews for anything. However, we felt it was appropriate here as the level of service we received more than deserves it. To cut a long story short, we bought a car from this company in early October which it turned out had some issues that we were unaware of at the time of making the purchase. We went back to them to discuss and, even though we were outside the 30 days, found Timmy and Aliya (the owners of the company) to be completely fair and reasonable in their approach. Rather than quibble, they immediately tried to solve the problems to our satisfaction as quickly as possible. In their own words, their main concern was ‘for their customers to be happy with their purchase’. We ended up returning the car, but felt confident enough in them to buy another one from them, rather than pushing for a refund, and we are very pleased that we did. We would not hesitate to recommend them to other customers. Buying a second had car can be a stressful process, and this industry is typically not known for its honesty, but in the case of this company, they are genuine and decent, and the service they offer is excellent.

Truly awful experience

I would strongly advise against buying a car from Oxford Automotive. I made that mistake some three months ago, and have been struggling with the consequences ever since.It was a cheap car, to be sure, a Renault, nearly 20 years old, and had about 85,000 miles on the clock. It had arrived in part exchange for some other vehicle. I was looking for a cheap car, because I was only going to be in the country for a couple of months, and I figured it would be cheaper to buy an old car and then resell it when I left the country than to rent a car for two months. I explained all this to the vendor, and took the car for a test ride.It drove pretty well, but there was a couple of signs that came up on the panel warning of problems with the electric parking brake. I was assured that this was a minor problem probably requiring application of some oil. I bought the car. However, the car was out of MOT by three or four days, and when I took it to a garage in Oxford for the MOT, I was told that the electric parking brake needed to be completely replaced, at a cost of some £550. Various other repairs would take the total to just over £1,000, more than I paid for the car itself. Also, because the part would have to be imported from France, it would probably take several weeks before the repair could be made. That of course torpedoed my hope of having a convenient vehicle for a couple of months. I contacted Oxford Automotive and requested a refund. One of the directors responded to my request by denying any obligation to refund me, but saying he would do so anyway as a gesture of goodwill. Later that day, he arrived at the garage in Oxford and duly took the car away. I thought that was the end of the matter, and expected the money to arrive in my bank account shortly. How wrong I was. The following day, he returned to the garage in Oxford and left the car on the forecourt, handing the keys and documents to a staff member there and hurrying away. He didn’t tell me he was going to do that, and never gave me any reason. I was simply told by the garage that the car was back and they wanted me to get it off there forecourt as soon as possible. I arranged for it to be removed and parked at my mother’s house while I tried to figure out what was going on. I made about 30 or 40 attempts to call Oxford Automotive, using several different phone numbers to make the calls, and never got a reply. I left quite a few messages on the director’s answering service, with no response. A month later, I made one more attempt at calling the director of Oxford Automotive, and he must have forgotten my phone number because he did pick up. He accused me of going back on our arrangement, because I had demanded that he pay extra money after he had already agreed to refund me. This had enraged him and was the reason he took the car back to the garage. But this was totally untrue. After he promised to refund me on the phone, I did send him an email, correcting something I had said over the phone and apologizing, but nowhere in this message did I demand that he pay more money. He seemed to calm down and said he would look into the matter – but nothing ever happened. His behavior has been unpredictable, and at no point has he actually said that he is not going to refund me. He just makes various delaying excuses and tries to put the blame on me – this is what they call gas-lighting. It has been an awful experience, and I would not wish it on anybody else.

Aliya and Tim are a joy to deal with and have a great sense of humour. They couldn't be more helpful and make buying a second hand car for a new driver straight forward. My daughter bought her first car from them 3 years ago, which she loved and we have just returned for my son's first car. He is very happy having just driven home in exactly the car he wanted with low mileage at a good price.
